It’s called The Greatest Spectacle in Racing, and with as many as 300,000 people in attendance, it likely qualifies as one of the greatest events in professional sports. First run in 1911, the Indianapolis 500 is part of the “triple crown” of auto racing, which also includes the Monaco Gran Prix and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Now more than a century old, the Indy 500 is steeped in ceremony and tradition. One of our favorite aspects of the race is the pace car—or rather, the pace cars. Though generally selected from the world of production automobiles, the official Indy 500 pace car is usually treated to unique trim and badging, and in some cases even custom bodywork.

For your consideration, we asked a handful of Consumer Guide editors to name their favorite Indy pace cars. No doubt if we had rallied more staff members to share their picks, we’d have an even longer list… it’s difficult to reach any sort consensus on which of the 100-plus Indy pace cars is the best.

America’s first production front-wheel-drive car, the Cord L-29, had its roots in the Brickyard. Harry Miller dominated the 500 from the mid-Twenties to mid-Thirties and designed a front-drive Indy car—and the L-29’s front-wheel drivetrain was based on Miller patents. Cornelius Van Ranst was another familiar figure at Indianapolis and also designed a front-drive Indy car; he was tapped as chief engineer on the Cord project. The heavyweight Cord wasn’t especially fast for its time, with a top speed of around 75 mph, but it had fine handling—as expected of a car with a racing heritage.

I’m not exaggerating when I say the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is one of my favorite places on Earth. I first went there for pole-day qualifying in 1976 and ’77, and have been attending the 500—with rare exception—since 1980, so I’ve seen lots of pace cars in action. Most of my favorites actually predate these years though, cars like the streamlined Chrysler Newport phaeton that paced the 1941 race, the 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air, that gold “bullet ’Bird” Thunderbird from 1961, and the 1978 Corvette. But for an absolute favorite, I’ll be Capt. Obvious and name the 1969 Chevy Camaro SS/RS. Ostensibly powered by a 396-cubic-inch “big-block” V8 (it’s alleged that a 427 actually rested beneath the domed “cowl-induction” hood) and sprayed in Dover White paint with wide Hugger Orange racing stripes, it was utterly striking from the get-go. The fact that it is associated with a race won by none other than Mario Andretti gives it an enduring place in motorsports history. The 3675 retail-sale replicas it spawned are perhaps the most collectible versions of a car that’s highly collectible to start with, and Camaros that came after it—including the pacer for the 2011 “Greatest Spectacle in Racing”—have freely traded on the ’69 car’s unforgettable image.

OK, I’m kind of bending the rules here. My pick—the 1979 Ford Mustang—might not be my all-time favorite pace car (in fact, I don’t even know if I can narrow it down to a single favorite), but my opinion of this particular Indy 500 workhorse has gone from “ehhh…” to “two thumbs up” over the last decade or so. After 15 years of overtly nostalgic Mustang styling (and a decade plus of retro-look Chevrolet Camaros and Dodge Challengers as well), the unabashedly forward-looking design of the early Fox-body Mustangs is looking great to my eyes as we roll into 2021.

I’m also a sucker for unique factory paint schemes and tape-stripe graphics, and the ’79 Mustang Pace Car’s livery is certainly memorable. I’m especially fond of the Pewter paint color—silver with just a hint of gold. The tape stripes and the strobe-fade running-horse decals were considered kitschy for a long while, but in the last few years I’ve seen several high-dollar ’79 Mustang street-machine builds that either use the stock pace-car graphics or sport custom paint schemes that riff on those graphics. What goes around comes around… sometimes in ways you’d never expect.

Shelby American has just revealed the new 2021 Shelby F-250 Super Baja and you’re going to want to check it out. This new truck is surrounded by new features that make it a perfect ride for daily driving and off-road adventures.

The base for this new Shelby American truck is a Lariat Ultimate 4×4 Ford F-250 that features a powerful 6.7-liter Power Stroke® turbo diesel engine (475 horsepower and 1,010 lb-ft of torque). Complementing the power this truck holds the new FOX performance suspension system that provides a higher ride height, more travel and improved handling when off-road. I joined the Consumer Guide team the summer of 2002. That means that, in just a few months, I will have been writing about cars full-time for 20 years. I mention this because I have only recently begun to consider just how much the automotive landscape has changed in the past two decades.

Most obviously, crossovers and SUVs have replaced traditional passenger cars as the general public’s preferred mode of personal transportation. High-technology “driver assistance” features that were barely even considered in 2002 are now commonplace, and often standard equipment. Recall that backup cameras–now a federally mandated safety feature–weren’t even available on new cars back in ’02.

Pickup trucks have changed, too. In some of their high-end trim levels, Ram pickups now rival top luxury-brand vehicles in terms of cabin refinement, and the regular-cab body style is now near extinction.

It saddens me a little that I am among the few people to recall—let alone care about—a failed attempt to resurrect the Studebaker brand that took place about 15 years ago. I also need to point out that the Kia Sedona minivan now starts around $31,000–considerably more than the $19,000 teased in the ad below.

Collected here are 12 car and truck ads–all but one of them from 2002. (We fudged a bit by including a 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid ad, but since the Civic Hybrid debuted in the spring of 2002 as an early 2003 model, it’s not much of a stretch.) I don’t know how nostalgic you feel yet about the cars of this century, but a close look at the ads below will demonstrate just how much things have changed. Of the dozen cars, seven are no longer in production, and two of the brands seen here are also now defunct. What big changes have you noted over the past 20 years? Collector cars can turn up in odd places. A 1925 Bugatti was found at the bottom of a Swiss lake. A 1957 Plymouth was buried in a time capsule in Oklahoma. The elements took their toll on both.

Ford’s history in Great Britain dates to 1903 when a small batch of cars was imported from America. By 1911, Ford’s British operations were assembling the Model T locally, but the first cars specifically designed for the English market did not arrive until the Thirties.

After World War II, Ford of Britain was able to restart civilian production by June 1945. Within a few years, some dealers in the United States were peddling a selection of British-built Ford products including Anglia and Prefect sedans and Thames light-duty trucks. 

The Anglia was based on the 7Y Eight model that went on sale in September 1937. The four-passenger car was 148.5 inches long end to end and rode a 90-inch wheelbase. Available only as a two-door saloon (a sedan to Americans), the 7Y had fender-mounted headlamps, a center-hinged hood, and a rear-mounted spare tire. The engine was a 933cc/56.9-cubic-inch L-head four-cylinder rated at 23.4 horsepower. The chassis and driveline followed typical Ford design practices of the time with transverse-leaf springs front and rear, a three-speed manual transmission, torque-tube drive, and mechanical brakes.

In 1940, the car was renamed Anglia. At the same time, it received a nearly upright grille, a longer hood, and a built-in trunk. After the war, the car benefited from an upgraded electrical system, improved rust resistance, and larger brakes. A slightly revised grille appeared for 1948.

The Anglia received another facelift for 1949. The “new” look was heavily based on the front sheetmetal from the original 7Y Eight, but a body-color divider followed the centerline of the car and split the grille into two sections. Each narrow opening was filled with an insert. The minor restyling proved to be attractive and the car carried on virtually unchanged until a modern new Anglia appeared in fall 1953. At that point, the old Anglia was rechristened the Popular and remained in production for six more years. The low-price Popular was powered by an 1172cc/71.6-inch four, a 30.1-horse engine that had previously been fitted to the slightly larger Prefect and the export-model Anglia.

The pictured car is an export-version 1949 Anglia that has been owned since 1981 by Douglas and Marlene Munro of Kinmount, Ontario, Canada. The car was originally sold by the Ford dealership in Banff, Alberta, Canada, and remained in that town until 1979. When found, the Anglia had been sitting in the yard where it was parked in the early Fifties. It had only 13,164 miles on its odometer, and the Munros say the car required only minimal restoration to make it roadworthy.

In terms of general statistical sexiness, brake performance has long taken a backseat to acceleration. Horsepower numbers are fun, 0-60-mph and quarter-mile times are fun. But braking? Most car guys know that reaching 60 mph from a stop in less than 6 seconds is an impressive feat. How many folks, I wonder, know what a decent time would be for coming to a complete stop from 60 mph?

It’s said that safety sells, but when it comes to classic car ads, the emphasis was always on power. Nonetheless, we did manage to find a number of great print ads extolling the virtues of superior braking performance.

Note that a few of the ads shared below are not for cars, but for suppliers and insurance firms. Seems that selling safety can be a complicated business.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of iconic movie “Bullitt” and its fan-favorite San Francisco car chase, Ford introduced the cool and powerful 2019 Mustang Bullitt.

Arguably the most famous Mustang of all is the dark-green 1968 Mustang GT fastback that Steve McQueen’s character Lieutenant Frank Bullitt drove in the 1968 motion picture Bullitt. Ford celebrated that iconic car with special-edition Bullitt Mustangs in 2001 and again in 2008-09. For 2019, Ford has released a third Bullitt Mustang, and like the others, it’s our choice for a future collectible.

The 2019 Bullitt is based on the Mustang GT Premium with Performance Package. Like the movie car, the exterior is lightly modified for a cleaner, more purposeful appearance. Up front there are unique upper and lower grille inserts, and the upper grille’s usual “pony” emblem is deleted. Subtle chrome accents around the grille and side windows further the retro vibe. Out back, the GT’s decklid spoiler has been left off and a simulated gas cap with a Bullitt logo rests on the panel between the taillamps. There are also quad exhaust tips finished in “NitroPlate Black.”

Exterior colors are limited to Dark Highland Green—like the original movie car—and Shadow Black. Bullitts roll on 19-inch “Heritage” alloy wheels with dark-finish five-spoke centers, and inside the rims the beefy Brembo-brand brake calipers are painted red. Mustang Chief Designer Darrell Behmer described the latest Bullitt this way: “As a designer, it’s my favorite Mustang—devoid of stripes, spoilers, and badges. It doesn’t need to scream about anything—it’s just cool.”

Under the hood, Mustang’s 5.0-liter V-8 received the Shelby GT350’s intake manifold, an Open Air Induction System, and a Bullitt-exclusive tune. The result is 480 hp and 420 pound-feet of torque. A “regular” Mustang GT has 20 less horsepower but the same torque rating.

Bullitt Mustangs are exclusively available with a six-speed manual transmission, and Ford says the car’s active exhaust system has been retuned to give the Bullitt its signature exhaust burble. A strut-tower brace runs above the 5.0, and it wears an additional Bullitt logo. Top speed is a claimed 163 mph, eight more than a stock Mustang GT.

Moving inside, the office is black with Dark Highland Green accent-stitch detailing. The Bullitt logo appears on the steering wheel, dashboard, and door-sill plates, while the shifter is topped with an old-school white “cue ball” knob. The standard 12-inch digital instrument cluster features Bullitt-specific welcome graphics. Recaro sport seats with additional Dark Highland Green stitching are optional for $1595.

There are only two other options. A $2100 Bullitt Electronics Package adds a blind-spot monitoring system with cross-traffic alert; upgraded 12-speaker stereo with trunk-mounted subwoofer; memory functions for driver’s seat, side mirrors, and ambient lighting system; and touchscreen navigation. Also, MagneRide semi-active suspension is available for an extra $1695.

Base price of the Bullitt is $46,595. For comparison, a 2019 Mustang GT Premium with Performance Package starts at $42,945.

Final Drive:

The 2019 Bullitt deftly applies the “less is more” design motif of the original 1968 movie car to the latest Mustang GT. The Dark Highland Green paint, five-spoke wheels, and subtle chrome accents work together surprisingly well, making this Bullitt a definite head turner and quite desirable.

First seen at the 1996 Detroit Auto Show, the Lincoln Sentinel Concept was described by then Ford design chief Jack Telnack as being “immediately identifiable as a Lincoln, even without badges.” Telnack boasted at the time that the Sentinel incorporated legacy Lincoln design elements without looking retro. At 218 inches in overall length, the Sentinel was nearly as long as the production Lincoln Town Car.

The large concept sedan was intended be a touchstone for future Lincoln design, combining elegance and design simplicity with visual presence.

Though not a running concept, Lincoln listed the Sentinel as rear-wheel drive and powered by a 6.0-liter V12 engine. Additional specs were never provided.

Interesting as the Sentinel is, I find myself reaching to find examples of its impact on subsequent Lincoln design. The best I can do is suggest that the Sentinel’s basic silhouette at least somewhat helped shape the redesigned-for-1998 Town Car. Echos of the Sentinel’s waterfall grille, however, would reverberate throughout the Lincoln lineup for years to come, as seen on the MKX below.

It’s a shame that in the aftermath of a design as striking as the Sentinel, Lincoln would roll out such uninteresting-looking sedans as the 2002-2006 LS. Like other luxury automakers, Lincoln’s attention would soon turn toward SUVs and crossovers and away from sedans–especially large sedans. Interesting point: As of now, neither Cadillac nor Lincoln produces a large sedan (the Cadillac CT6 was discontinued after a short run of 2020-model-year cars). Both brands, however, retail tens of thousands of large SUVs. As for the Sentinel’s V12 engine: That would have been cool.

2021 F-150 Adds Hybrid, Confirms Full Electric Version

It’s only been five years since the last major redesign of the Ford F-150, not a long time historically in the truck world, but with competition heating up both in the traditional competitors and newcomers, Ford is pushing forward with the introduction of the all-new 2021 F-150, a remake of its best-selling and most lucrative model.

The goal of the introduction this week, hosted by Ford spokesperson Dennis Leary and featuring a variety of Ford employees and F-150 customers, was to show that Ford is well-aware that its industry-leading position (best-selling truck for the past 43 years) is not something assumed, but an achievement to be re-earned every year. The 2021 Ford F-150 has a very simple goal—maintain and expand that market lead for another year or two.

Highlights of the introduction (some detail below) included the presentation of a new full hybrid model and confirmation that a full-electric version is coming. The other big takeaway is that electrification in a pickup take a significantly different form that in a sedan. In a truck application, the emphasis of a large battery is less on propulsion and zero emission miles than on providing a mobile power source for tools and toys.

Next year’s F-150, which will go on sale this fall, follows the typical pickup mold of offering a dizzying number of options in an attempt to provide a potential pickup for every possible buyer. The completely redesigned truck (every one of the aluminum exterior panel is new) will offer six engines, 13 different wheels and 11 grille options in a half-dozen trim levels.

Aerodynamics & tough pickups don’t always go together

Although no official fuel economy numbers are available, Ford pointed out that it was the most aerodynamic pickup the company has ever designed, employing grille shutters, a new automatically deploying air dam and new cab and tailgate geometry to reduce drag and reduce fuel consumption on all models.

The new hybrid F-150 will use an all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, augmented by a 35-kW/47-horsepower electric motor. A 10-speed transmission and 1.5 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery (mounted between the frame rails so it doesn’t take up any passenger or cargo space) complete the powertrain.

The all-electric F-150 will come in 2022, according to Ford COO Jim Farley. When it arrives, it will likely face several competitors, including the Rivian R1T, GMC Hummer, Tesla Cybertruck, Lordstown Endeavor and Nikola Badger.

Electrification on the Job

Back to the present, Ford sees electric power as another tool for the job. The 2021 F-150 will come up with up to 7.2 kilowatts (kW) of exportable power, enough to run a generator and a variety of power tools through 120-volt and/or 240-volt outlets.

Plugs for all your jobs

Inside Ford has added a variety of high-tech features that point out how mainstream the modern pickup has become. One clever addition is that, with a few quick shifts of hardware, the center console can become a desk big enough to hold a laptop. Above that center console half of the F-150 lineup will have 12.0-inch touchscreen displays, matching what’s becoming the standard for the segment. The display will come equipped with Sync4, the latest version of Ford’s infotainment system. Ten new advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are going to be available.

Recognizing the variety of uses a truck might undergo, Ford has designed the front seats to recline 180 degrees, so not only is the pickup and office, but also a bedroom. Under the backseat is a lockable storage unit for stashing away valuables or expensive tools.

The Most List

What a pickup needs is a most list and Ford has drawn up a long one. The stated goal of the 2021 F-150 is to be able to tow the biggest load in its class, carry the heaviest payload, have the most horsepower and torque and also have the longest range.

More tech than seen in a pickup before

Don’t expect the competition to take this lying down, but Ford also had other news last week that went well beyond the news about the redesign of its best-selling product. The company laid out a goal of becoming of becoming carbon neutral by 2050 with three areas of focus that account for  95 peercent of the companies CO2 emissions:

  • Vehicle use
  • Supply base
  • Facilities

On the vehicle side, it’s putting $11.5 billion through 2022 into the Mustang Mach-E, Transit Commercial and fully electric F-150. It expects all of its manufacturing plants to use 100 percent locally sourced renewable energy by 2035.
